Ever notice how the heat from your stove seems to stay in one spot, and you end up turning the heating on anyway? What if we told you that you could fix that…with a stove fan?

By using nothing but the heat from your log burner, these fans efficiently circulate warm air throughout your space, reaching those cold spots and creating that warm, cosy winter hug you’ve been looking for.

But beyond the cosiness, did you know they can save you money by maximising heat distribution and reducing the need for additional heating sources? In this blog, we’re going to explain how owning a stove fan can improve your heating efficiency.

Save Fuel, Save Money

Stove fans aren’t just about spreading warmth. Sure, they excel at that, but they can also help you burn less fuel—no, seriously, they can!

By pushing warm air around the room, you can lower the temperature on your stove without sacrificing comfort. This means using less wood or fuel over time, which is great news for both your wallet and the environment. Imagine getting more heat for less effort—it’s a win-win!

The Science Behind It: No Electricity Required

How does a stove fan work? How does it go from being a simple gadget to powering heat around your home?

It’s all thanks to a clever piece of technology called a thermoelectric generator (TEG). As the fan sits on top of your stove, the heat difference between the base of the fan and its cooler top powers the motor. No batteries, no wiring—just pure heat-driven magic!

And the result?

You can enjoy efficient heat distribution without worrying about running up your electricity bill—another win!

Eco-Friendly and Low Maintenance

Not only do stove fans help you save on fuel costs, but they’re also an eco-friendly option for boosting your home’s heating efficiency. Since they require no electricity or batteries, they have zero carbon footprint. Plus, they don’t require much maintenance beyond the occasional dusting and part replacement (which you can get here, by the way), making them hassle-free additions to your heating setup.

Choosing the Right Stove Fan

Not all stove fans are created equal, so it’s essential to choose one that fits your specific stove and room size. For larger spaces, a fan with a higher CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) rating will circulate more air, while a smaller fan may be perfect for compact rooms.

For smaller rooms, models like our Mini Viking and SuperFast Mini will fit snugly, while for larger, open-plan rooms, the SF-V-A Viking Stove Fan is your winner, with its heavy-duty design and ability to produce and distribute heat up to 20°C (68°F)—which is significantly hotter than competitors.

Conclusion: A Smart Upgrade for Your Home

Incorporating a stove fan into your home is an easy, cost-effective way to transform how you heat your space. By increasing heat distribution, lowering fuel consumption, and reducing environmental impact, stove fans prove that sometimes the simplest upgrades make the biggest difference. So why not give one a try and enjoy a warmer, more efficient home this winter?

Being at the heart of the winter season, there is no better feeling than coming home from a cold, sharp environment to a roaring log-burning fire and a stove fan […]

Being at the heart of the winter season, there is no better feeling than coming home from a cold, sharp environment to a roaring log-burning fire and a stove fan spinning away to push much-needed heat towards you and around the room.

Yet, despite the cosy scene, achieving ideal heat circulation in your space can pose a challenge at times. While tending to the fire is essential and simple to do, did you know that the placement of your stove fan holds the key to enhancing the warm-feeling experience?

Believe it or not, it actually can.

Don’t put it there!

It may be seen as a perfect practice to place your stove fan in the middle of your log burner or as close to the flue as possible and watch it work its magic, but this could be more damaging than helping.

This will be due to the location of the pipe/flue, which, once it’s in full flow, is the hottest section of the stove and even though the majority of fans have a self-regulated temperature mechanism (ours included), it may cause the fan to overheat and overwork, resulting in it vibrating or sounding like it’s underperforming.

This could also result in it needing to be repaired or replaced.

The Best Location For It

So where would your stove fan sit if it’s not centre?

Well, the golden rule is to keep them near the back of the stove. Placing them near the front would make sense as that’s where most of the heat would be, right? Wrong.

This positioning enables the fan to efficiently capture the heat produced by the wood-burning stove, pushing it forward and increasing the overall warmth in your living area.

Moving too far forward would result in very little warm air being circulated.

Another reason to move it to the back of the fan (if possible), is for all-round safety. This could protect younger family members and household pets that may use the room at the same time.

This Could Help Your Stove Fan

Rather than letting the fire build for an hour or so to reach a rough temperature, investing in a specialised thermometer is a great way to know when the optimal temperature has been reached to get the most out of your stove fan and also, preserve your stove and flue.

Many of them are magnetic (including ours) and easy to read, with indicators showing when your fire is fine or too much.

A stove fan is an affordable appliance that can improve the warmth of your room by circulating the heat from your wood stove. It can work with different stove types, including pellet stoves, gas stoves, and wood-burning stoves.

The heat-powered stove fan does not require any additional costs. You only need to position it correctly to take advantage of the warm air so you can get the most out of your wood-burning stove.

Have you ever noticed a hazy sky in a big city or felt like the air was thicker than usual on a smoggy day? Chances are, you were encountering something called “particulate matter” or PM. In this blog post, we’ll break down what particulate matter is, where it can be found, and why it can be harmful to people, all in the most basic and simple way possible.

What is Particulate Matter?

Particulate matter, often abbreviated as PM, is a term used to describe tiny particles or droplets in the air. These particles are so small that you can’t see them with the naked eye. They’re like invisible dust or smoke.

Where Can You Find Particulate Matter?

Particulate matter is all around us, and it comes from various sources:

Natural Sources: Some PM is generated naturally. For instance, dust from deserts and wildfires can become particulate matter when it’s carried by the wind.

Man-Made Sources: Human activities are significant contributors to PM pollution. Factories, cars, trucks, and even construction sites release particles into the air. These particles can be a mix of things like dirt, chemicals, and even tiny bits of metals.

Indoor Sources: Particulate matter isn’t just outdoors. It can also be found inside homes and buildings. Activities like cooking, smoking, and using certain cleaning products can produce indoor PM.

Now, let’s get to the important question: why should we care about these invisible particles?

Respiratory Problems: When you breathe in air with high levels of particulate matter, these tiny particles can enter your lungs. This can irritate your respiratory system, leading to symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. For people with asthma or other respiratory conditions, exposure to PM can worsen their symptoms.

Heart Issues: PM doesn’t just affect your lungs; it can also impact your heart. Studies have shown that long-term exposure to high levels of PM is associated with an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular problems.

Reduced Lung Growth in Children: Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of PM exposure. Breathing in polluted air can harm their developing lungs, potentially leading to reduced lung function as they grow up.

General Health Concerns: Some studies have even suggested links between PM exposure and other health issues like diabetes and low birth weight in newborns.

In simple terms, particulate matter is like invisible dust and tiny particles floating in the air. It can come from natural sources like dust storms or wildfires, as well as human activities such as driving cars and industrial processes. Breathing in this invisible pollution can cause respiratory problems, heart issues, and even harm children’s lung development. So, it’s essential to be aware of PM levels in your environment and take steps to reduce your exposure, like staying indoors on smoggy days or using air purifiers in your home. By understanding what particulate matter is and how it can affect our health, we can take steps to protect ourselves and our loved ones from its harmful effects.

Have you ever noticed that “new car smell” or the scent of fresh paint in a newly decorated room? These odours are often caused by something called Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs. While they may seem harmless, understanding what VOCs are, where they can be found, and their potential harm to people is essential for maintaining a healthy environment. In this blog post, we’ll break down VOCs in the most basic and simple way.

What Are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)?

At its core, a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) is a chemical that can turn into a gas or vapour at room temperature. These chemicals are released into the air from various products and materials we use daily. VOCs are a part of a wide range of chemical compounds, and they can have both natural and man-made sources.

Where Can VOCs Be Found?

Indoor Sources: VOCs are commonly found indoors, where they can accumulate to higher concentrations due to poor ventilation. Common indoor sources include:

Paints and Solvents: Paints, varnishes, and the thinners used to clean them often contain VOCs that can evaporate into the air as the paint dries.

Cleaning Products: Many household cleaning products, such as disinfectants and air fresheners, release VOCs during use.

Furniture and Building Materials: Particleboard, plywood, and some types of carpets and upholstery may emit VOCs, particularly when new.

Personal Care Products: Perfumes, deodorants, and hairsprays can also contain VOCs.

Outdoor Sources: VOCs can be found outdoors as well, with sources like vehicle emissions, industrial processes, and natural sources like trees and plants releasing these compounds into the atmosphere.

How Can VOCs Be Harmful to People?

While not all VOCs are harmful, some can pose health risks, especially when present in high concentrations or over extended periods. The potential harm from VOC exposure includes:

Irritation: Short-term exposure to VOCs can lead to eye, nose, and throat irritation, as well as headaches.

Respiratory Problems: Prolonged exposure to high levels of VOCs can contribute to respiratory issues, such as worsening asthma symptoms or even the development of asthma in some individuals.

Allergic Reactions: Some people may be sensitive to specific VOCs, experiencing allergic reactions like skin rashes or congestion when exposed.

Long-Term Health Effects: Certain VOCs, like formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene, have been linked to more severe health issues, including cancer, liver and kidney damage, and central nervous system problems. However, exposure to these harmful VOCs typically occurs over extended periods and at high levels.

In summary, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that can evaporate into the air from various products and materials found in our daily lives. While not all VOCs are harmful, understanding where they can be found and their potential health risks is crucial for maintaining a healthy indoor and outdoor environment. Proper ventilation and choosing low-VOC or VOC-free products whenever possible can help reduce exposure and keep you and your loved ones safe.

Carbon dioxide, often abbreviated as CO2, is a gas that exists naturally in our atmosphere. It’s an essential part of the Earth’s ecosystem, but like most things in life, too […]

Carbon dioxide, often abbreviated as CO2, is a gas that exists naturally in our atmosphere. It’s an essential part of the Earth’s ecosystem, but like most things in life, too much of it can be harmful. In this blog post, we’ll break down carbon dioxide levels in the simplest way possible: what they are, where they can be found, when they’re dangerous, and how they can be harmful to people.

What are Carbon Dioxide Levels?

Carbon dioxide (CO2) levels refer to the amount of carbon dioxide gas present in the air around us. It’s one of the many gases that make up Earth’s atmosphere. Picture the air you breathe as a mix of different gases like oxygen, nitrogen, and a tiny amount of carbon dioxide.

Where Can They Be Found?

Carbon dioxide is everywhere! It’s a natural part of the air, and you’ll find it indoors and outdoors. When you breathe out, you release carbon dioxide into the air. Plants also take in carbon dioxide and use it for photosynthesis, which is how they grow and produce oxygen.

When Are They Dangerous?

Carbon dioxide is typically not dangerous at the levels we encounter every day. In fact, we need a certain amount of it in the air to stay healthy. However, problems arise when there’s too much of it in a confined space, like a room or a car. This can happen if there’s not enough fresh air circulating to bring in oxygen and carry away the excess CO2.

How Can They Be Harmful to People?

Too much carbon dioxide in the air can be harmful to our health. Here’s how:

Difficulty Breathing: High levels of CO2 can make it hard to breathe. You might feel short of breath or dizzy.

Headaches: Breathing in air with elevated CO2 levels can lead to headaches and make you feel tired and sluggish.

Confusion: In extreme cases, excessive carbon dioxide can even cause confusion and impaired thinking.

Suffocation: If the concentration of CO2 becomes extremely high in an enclosed space, it can lead to suffocation. This is very rare but can happen in situations like poorly ventilated underground spaces.

How to Stay Safe

To stay safe and healthy, it’s important to ensure good ventilation in enclosed spaces. This means letting fresh air in and allowing carbon dioxide to escape. Open windows and doors, use fans and make sure ventilation systems are working properly. If you ever feel dizzy or have difficulty breathing in a confined area, it’s crucial to get to fresh air immediately.

In summary, carbon dioxide is a natural part of the air we breathe, but too much of it in an enclosed space can be harmful to our health. Good ventilation is the key to maintaining safe carbon dioxide levels and ensuring we get the right mix of gases to breathe comfortably and stay healthy.
